Background of the Study
Muhammadu Buhari’s administration launched several social investment programs aimed at alleviating poverty and improving the living standards of vulnerable populations in Nigeria. The programs, such as the National Social Investment Program (NSIP), included initiatives like the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT), Home-Grown School Feeding Program (HGSFP), N-Power (youth employment program), and the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Program (GEEP). These initiatives were designed to support low-income households, create employment, and improve access to education and healthcare.
Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, has a large rural population with high levels of poverty, making it one of the key areas targeted by these programs. This study aims to evaluate the effect of Buhari’s social investment programs on poverty reduction in Makurdi, specifically focusing on how these programs have impacted local communities in terms of income generation, education, and health outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the launch of social investment programs by the Buhari administration, there are ongoing debates about their effectiveness in reducing poverty at the local level. In Makurdi, while some individuals have benefited from the programs, the overall impact on poverty reduction in the community remains uncertain. Factors such as limited access to the programs, inadequate distribution, and implementation challenges may affect the outcomes. This study will examine how these social investment programs have influenced poverty levels in Makurdi and whether they have effectively addressed the socio-economic challenges faced by residents.
